Information about DENMARK As the country that links the rest of Scandinavia with continental Europe, Denmark has always benefited from a unique stream of cultural influences and commercial opportunities. Its towns and cities are a wonderful mix of the historical and the modern. Its most well-known son is writer Hans Christian Andersen, who is commemorated with a museum in his hometown of Odense. Denmark is now famous for being the seat of power of the Vikings, who conquered and controlled great swathes of northern Europe 1000 years ago. Denmark is a series of peninsulas and islands which are linked by ferryboats and bridges. It is the sea which dominates the ambience of the country, as it is never far away. As the land is all but completely flat, cycling is a popular mode of transport and there are more than 10,000km of designated pathways criss-crossing the country. The thoroughly modern market economy has seen the country thrive in the post-war period, and its citizens enjoy a high standard of living. Its businesses are very export dependent, making Denmark an important partner in foreign trade.
